When I had the Pet scan: 31st October 19

I was in hospital with a infection or something that was making me extremly poorly which doctors couldn't find. Doctors were pulling there hair out as they had done many tests which were all coming back normal but they hadn't done a pet scan, So the doctors thought it would be worth me having one done to see if it shows up anything.

I had to be NIL by mouth from 10am so I ate my breakfast at 8am and then about 930am I ate a sandwich which I had in the ward fridge. My appointment for the pet scan was at 5pm/530pm for 2 hours so I had to be NIL by mouth till 730pm. So in that time I could only have sips of water. I had a canular fitted on the ward before I went as part of a pet scan is that you have radioactive liquid put in via the canular so it shows up bits and pieces wrong in your body so they can see what is the problem.

It got to 5pm/530pm and a porter came to the ward to take me for my pet scan, I had to have a nurse escort who had to stay with me the whole time i was down there(unsure why). One young lady nurse came with me but due to her not knowing if she was pregnant or not she had to go back to the ward and another nurse had to be my escort as anyone pregnant cannot be near anything radioactive. When I got down to my appointment they wrapped me up with blankets over my body and over my  head and then wheeled me to a small port-a-cabin where the pett scanner was which was outside and at that time of day it was really cold. I had to fill in some medical paperwork ready for the pett scan too. They toke me out the wheelchair and sat me in a big chair in the port-a-cabin, they then put the radioactive liquid into my canular and then removed the canular as I didn't need it anymore. By this time i started to feel extremly hungry and thirsty. They put pillows and blankets around me to make me as comfortable as I can be as i wasn't well at all and felt rubbish too and I was also in alot of extreme pain all over my body. I started to riggor as I obviously spiked a tempeture but due to being where I was there was nothing that could be done so I had to ride it out and being NIL by mouth I couldn't have anything untill I wasn't NIL by mouth.

I had to sit where I was for about 1 hour, I fell asleep and as I fell asleep my head hit the assistance button on the wall so the lady who gave me the radioactive liquid came in and asked me if I was ok and I said yes I just fell asleep and must of hit my head on the call bell. She said ok darling as long as your ok. Then the nurse who was my escort came back into the port-a-cabin as it was now my turn to have the pet scan.

I was struggling to walk from the chair to the pet scanner as my hands and feet where extremly sore and swollen. Got onto the scanners 'bed thing', and I had to lay on my back, they put a sponge triangle wedge under my legs so I was more comfortable and then they covered me in blankets to keep me warm. They then strapped me in with these soft straps, and told me to lay still as the scan was about to start. The 'bed thing's I was laying on moved in and out of the scanner while the scanner scanned my whole body. Once the scan was over they got me back into the wheelchair and my nurse escort toke me back to the ward. When I got to the ward I got straight into my hospital bed, I had a drink and asked for my salad from the fridge and the nurse also ordered me a jacket potato with cheese and beans. When the jacket potato finally come up to the ward it wasn't very warm so I ate all I fancied and left the rest. Then I drank more as I was really thirsty.

Pet scan results:
The doctors came and told me the next morning and told me that my pet scan showed my belly button was glowing meaning it had a infection in there so the doctors started me on some cream for my belly button to be applied a couple of times a day.

Also the results showed that my whole liver is enlarged and glowing, the doctors then said it could be a drug reaction or GVHD or something else.

And the results also showed I potentially have polyps in my bowel so the doctors ordered me a camera test up my bottom to have a look (a few days later I had the camera test where they couldn't see all they needed to see so they rescheduled for me to have another one as a outpatients appointment on the 11/12/19) .
